BHS to offer optional standardized testing this October

BHS to offer optional standardized testing this October

Interested students must register by September 13th

Good morning BHS families,

Last April, all state-mandated standardized testing was considered optional due to the global pandemic.  The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has given schools the option to offer October make-up|retest dates in-person for those optional April assessments.

Please know that these standardized assessments are not state-mandated and are completely voluntary for students.  Getting back to a new normal and routine is going to be hard for students, after a difficult year and a half.  It is completely fine, and healthy, for your student to not subject themselves to standardized testing during the second month of the school year.

GRADE LEVEL OPTIONAL ASSESSMENT MAKE-UP / RETEST DATE TEST REGISTRATION
Due by September 13
Current 12th graders only  SAT (No essay) October 28 Register for the SAT
Current 11th graders only PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying test)
October 13 Register for the PSAT/NMSQT
Current 10th graders only PSAT 10 (same as the PSAT/NMSQT) October 26 Register for the PSAT 10
Current 9th graders only PSAT 8/9 October 20 Register for the PSAT 8/9

Important Questions & Information

Is this make-up assessment required?

  • Students are not required to take these assessments.
  • The purpose of this optional fall administration is to offer the opportunity to students to make-up|retest the College Board assessments that were also  optional last April.

Will my student have the opportunity to take these assessments in the future?

  • Yes!  State testing will be mandatory this April!
  • 9th graders will take the PSAT 8/9 again in April!
  • 10th graders will take the PSAT 10 again in April!
  • 11th graders will take the SAT in April!

What will this optional assessment look like?

  • Students will test in one of the BHS gymnasiums on the corresponding testing date.
  • All required Berkley School District safety protocols (including PPE/mandatory masks/social distancing) will be followed.
  • Students who register will be excused from their classes on the day of their assessment.

How does my student sign up to take this optional assessment?

  • Students who would like to take an optional make-up assessment must register online using the links in the table above.
  • The deadline to register is September 13th.
  • Due to staffing concerns and test material ordering, cancellations will not be permitted.
  • Students will receive additional information after the September 13th deadline.
  • If your student is not interested in taking an optional fall assessment, you do not need to complete the online registration form.

Will colleges see my student’s scores?  Does my student need this for college?

  • Colleges do not see PSAT scores.  Students must elect to send their SAT scores to colleges.  Colleges do not have automatic access to test scores.
  • Most colleges are continuing with test-optional policy - meaning SAT scores are not required for admission.
  • If your student is interested in a particular college, they should visit the college’s admission website or contact the college admissions representative for information on admission requirements/testing policies.

Please contact me directly with any questions.

Sincerely,

Christina Belsky, BHS Testing Coordinator
