Board of Education Honors BHS Soccer Team, Swimmers and Retiree at December Meeting
BHS Boys Soccer
The BHS Boys Soccer team was honored for achieving All-State Academic Status for the Fall 2023 Season. In addition to the team accolades for academics, the team also was ranked #1 in the State and #19 in the nation during the season. Individually, many players also received All-State accolades.
Individual Academic All-State Honors: Jaxon Cain, Gabe Calio, Andrew Cook, Seth Davidson, Beck Peters, Abe Schnackel
- Mac Sperl, Junior: All-State Honorable Mention
- Kai Nielsen, Junior: 3rd Team All-State
- Dennis Hayes, Senior: 2nd Team All-State
- Owen Stone, Senior: 2nd Team All-State
- Seth Davidson, Senior: 1st Team All-State, Dream Team All-State, Best Keeper in MI, Mr. Soccer Runner Up, named to the All-Regional Team and All-American Team (the first BHS player selected as an All-American for soccer)
BHS Girls Swimming
Seven swimmers qualified for the Division 2 State Swim Meet. The Board honored these swimmers for their relay and individual accomplishments. In addition, the State Team finished in 11th place in the state – the highest finish for the girls swim and dive team in the last 20 years.
Individual Accomplishments
- Bryce Scully, Senior: 2nd in the State in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, earning All-State status and setting a team record. 4th in the State for the 100 Yard Butterfly, earning All-State status and setting a team record.
- Lucy Pugh, Junior: 27th in the 200 Yard Freestyle, 34th in the 100 Yard Freestyle
- Mia Mracna, Freshman: 12th in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, 28th in the 200 Yard Individual Medley
- Alana Horwitz, Junior: 22nd in the 100 Yard Breaststroke
- Maddie Collins, Sophomore: 8th in the 50 Yard Freestyle, earning All-State and setting a team record
Relay Accomplishments
- 200 Yard Medley Relay: 8th place in the state, earning All-State status and setting a team record. Swimmers: Lucy Pugh, Mia Mracna, Maddie Collins, Bryce Scully
- 200 Yard Freestyle Relay: 10th place in the state and setting a team record. Swimmers: Maddie Collins, Lucy Pugh, Alana Horwitz, Bryce Scully
- 400 Yard Freestyle Relay: Qualified for States and swam in the preliminary competition. Swimmers: Mia Mracna, Alana Horwitz, Jessica Gleason, Annalia Rayo
Honoring Larry Gallagher, Deputy Superintendent
The Board recognized Larry Gallagher, Deputy Superintendent of Finance, Facilities and Operations for his 28 years of service to the Berkley School District. Mr. Gallagher is retiring from the Berkley School District. His last day is December 15. Throughout his career, Mr. Gallagher has been known for his commitment to keeping students at the center of the work, diligent and detailed financial reports, high marks for all audit reports and leading the District through any financial difficulties and decisions. Mr. Gallagher has been recognized for his work at the local and state level, receiving both the Oakland County Business Official of the Year and the Michigan Business Official of the Year during his career, as well as numerous regional awards such as the Cipriano Award three years in a row. Mr. Gallagher is also known for his love of the Detroit Tigers and his family. The Board of Education presented him with a custom Detroit Tigers jersey with his name and the number 28 on the back.
