Family Coding Night at Burton and Rogers Elementary

Family Coding Night at Burton and Rogers Elementary
Elementary Family Coding Nights kicked off this week at Burton and Rogers Elementary. Students and their families spent the first half of the event rotating through several interactive stations. The stations included:
- STEM/Coding Books: Families could browse a selection of picture and chapter books around STEM and coding topics and have a family read aloud!
- Unplugged & Digital Activities for Coding at Home: Families explored some different ways to engage in coding at home like a simple Rubik’s cube or an Osmo device.
- Coding Beebot Robots through a Maze: Families learned to use a programmable Beebot robot to solve a series of mazes.
- “Real Life Algorithms” Plant A Seed Activity: Families had to create an algorithm and follow it to plant a seed to take home.
After visiting the stations, the attendees gathered for a group coding activity. The activity was to complete a series of block coding puzzles using an Hour of Code activity by Code.org. Students and families took turns being “navigator” and “driver” on a Chromebook to collaboratively problem solve through new programming skills like loops and debugging.
This event was made possible through funds provided by the MiSTEM: Oakland Region and a Michigan Department of Education Computer Science grant to support continued work on expanding computer science pathways for students. Berkley Schools was also the first district in Oakland County to complete the Strategic CSforALL Planning Tool for School Districts (SCRIPT) computer science vision and goal setting program.
Family Coding Night resumes next week at the following schools:
- Angell: Monday, April 24th (6-7:30 pm)
- Norup: Wednesday, May 3rd (6-7:30 pm)
- Pattengill: Monday, May 15th (6-7:30 pm)
